Turned away from hospital, again

Turned away from hospital, again

For the 2nd time both my GP and my private psychologist urged me to present at hospital. My GP, again for the 2nd time, wrote a letter for me to take to give to the hospital staff explaining my conditions and state.

Again I waited at the hospital (a different one to last time) and was able to have a brief meeting with a clinician. She listened to me as I went through all my physical and mental conditions (I had prepared with a list). She wasn't interested in the letter from the GP at all.

After the 20 minute consultation she just told me to call a mental health NGO.

I'm scared sh*tless of how bad my mental and physical health is becoming and I'm trying to do my best to do something - anything - about it, but I'm failing. I don't actually want to go to hospital, but I don't know what else I can do.

How am I meant to get help?

Re: Turned away from hospital, again

@JlolI'm sorry to hear that you are struggling to get the support you need. Are your psychologist or GP unable to assist you further now you have had this experience with the hospitals?

I hope that they can directly contact the right hospital to assist you, and that with the right care you can find your good place again soon.

Take care and as hard as it is keep on pushing until you get what you need.

Best of luck and keep talking here as there are some good people who may offer better suggestions than I have.

Hi @Jlol

I'm sorry that you got turned away from the hospital yet again. Especially since I know how hard it is to go in the first place. It simply isn't fair that since you can't 'see' the illness that we don't need the same help as others.

Have you been able to contact your gp again and let her know what happened?

Re: Turned away from hospital, again

Hi @Jlol ,

Please don't laugh, but as a far less stressful option I would sometimes book into a motel for a couple of nights, just to get a mental 'break' from all my problems. I've been in a mental ward a few times and I prefer the peace and quiet of the motel room without dealing with others' issues.

It worked for me: it was clean, I didn't have to stress about all the busy jobs of home, I could get a break from my normal routine, and just de-stress & try and get my head clear. I would take a book/books and try to research solutions.

Hey @justanotherguy

As I've worked in a mental health unit, and saw it would never be the place for me, I really love your idea. I actually find it quite genius and could work for some who just need that mental space. For monitoring re meds and stuff I guess the hospital is the go. But yeah, would work for me!

Re: Turned away from hospital, again

I thought I could spend 5 nights in Fiji and the only decision I would have to make each day was which side of the pool should I put my towel.

However @Jlol it is not good that you have gone for help and been turned away. You shouldn’t have to take drastic steps for an admission. Do you have a local Acute care team? If so, they might be able to help.

Im sorry this has happened.

Re: Turned away from hospital, again

Thanks @Eve7

Yes the last time was through the acute care team
