Undiagnosed autism and adulthood

Re: Undiagnosed autism and adulthood

I believe you about autistic traits @justanotherguy so do I and every now I look at a podcast or something about it and can relate.  My son was formally diagnosed and that pdoc suggested his parents were a bit similar, and we were, in that respect, nerdy sciencey, academic, introverted.... kind of like special interests etc ...

Only you know, if getting a diagnosis will make a difference for you. I made the call I cannot justify the $1500, its probably gone up since I last checked.  I am alright with identifying as aspie, but its important, it seems I am careful to which people I disclose that, as some will still see it as MI...  anyway that is my experience.

My mother was not educated and had narrow interests due to limited circs growing up. She could not relate to me at all, my father tried but died young.  I do think it worthwhile to look at causal factors more than labels, but that is my opinion.

Have you re-engaged in your earlier interests again.  You mentioned meds took a lot out of you, but are feeling a bit better now.

@Appleblossom @wellwellwellnez @hanami

Well, well, just going back over past posts, and it's all still so relevant. Finally some things have started working out but still have 'autistic traits' (whatever that means). I hope @Appleblossom  this thread helped somewhat, it seemed to awaken the fact that being sensible & intelligent should not be seen as a 'disability'!

Re: Undiagnosed autism and adulthood

Love your last line ... @justanotherguy

"Being sensitve and intelligent should not be seen as a disability"

I have gone through these mental heatlh implications with the diligence of an aspie ... I am even starting to crack my own mental health jokes... which is telling me I have come full circle... for me your statement also includes the dreaded ... "schizophrenia" ... I know I have only 5 anecdotal long term cases in my personal life study ... but heeps of 'professional' papers are published with an appaulingly low case numbers ... it needs to be explored more.

Hello @justanotherguy

Nice to see you here again. I'm glad to hear some things are working out, despite some other challenges.

Warmest wishes
