Diagnosis Change

Diagnosis Change

I had my psychiatrist appointment this morning with my new psychiatist. I like her, Im pretty sure that I can work with her. Probably the first psychiatrist I have had where I felt a connection with them that quickly.

Her and my psychologist are accessed via an online platform, which I think I like, I think I feel like it allows me to feel a bit more disconnected and seperated from the therapist. I know they are there etc but Im not in the same room, so I feel like I can be more open, I feel safer.

Before I saw her, I sent her an email, which I did the same for with the psychologist. My situation is fairly complicated, there is a fair bit of mental health but a lot of physical health as well. Then there is the whole family issues, lots of both there too. So, I figure its worthwhile emailing a reasonably detailed overview or Im gonna talk about something and the therapist will have no idea what Im refering to.

The psychiatrist did read it, she spent the session asking questions she had from what I had written. From the two she said that Bipolar 2 w/ psychotic features was the wrong diagnosis and diagnosed me with schitzoaffective disorder. An old psychiatrist had suggested it but never actually diagnosed it, so its not a huge suprise. She has upped my antidepressants and changed my antipsychotics. Hopefully this change works or at least works better than what Im doing now. But at least finally Ive seen her and something different is getting done.

Re: Diagnosis Change

Thanks for the update @ClockFace .

It sounds like any change is a good change. At least there is some movement and you are not 'stuck' where you are - even if it feels like it sometimes.

Re: Diagnosis Change

Sounds like the change in Psychiatrist has been a positive move for you @ClockFace

How are you feeling about the change in diagnosis?

@Velvet_VanDetta

Back when they initially thought it might be schizoaffective disorder I looked into it a bit, so I know a bit about it already. I think it better suits my experiences, I think it makes more sense than Bipolar 2 with psychotic features, I dont think that has ever sat terribly well.

Re: Diagnosis Change

Hi @ClockFace

Getting the best fit diagnosis goes a long way to helping understand ourselves and being able to support ourselves and others understanding on how to support us too. Here is a good fact sheet about Schizoaffective disorder...schizoaffective-disorder-2023.pdf (mind.org.uk). Hope it is useful for you 😊

I notice there is no factsheet on Schizoaffective disorder here. I was given some information from a website called Mind, they have pretty good information there. Hope it is useful for you 😊
