This might seem a bit off topic but for me it explains a lot.
I have a loved one who worked in the petroleum industry and when cars switched to unleaded fuel in Australia in 1986 it was clear that the exhaust fumes from leaded fuel cars were causing harm to people - that's why leaded fuel was phased out. And upon further reading years ago I was amazed at how large the problem was - every person on the planet was likely affected by leaded fuel in this way. Lead is a neurotoxin and basically causes madness (to varying degrees). The authorities had no choice but to phase it out.
I was kind of aloof and a bit of a dreamer as a kid and now on the other side of my mental health issues, I expect to feel like back then, but don't. I don't daydream or sit staring at the clouds anymore. It's really unnerving to get used to, like retraining myself to live in a clean environment. It's hard to pin down exactly what 'normal' is supposed to feel like. It harder when I get the impression some people like the old leaded world much better & would like me to jump back in with them too.
